A Dunedin man is feeling the pinch of bank fees.

Scott Volp says the fees he has been charged by Kiwibank are unfair and he is urging others to check what they are being charged.

He changed banks to Kiwibank in mid-2012 after having issues with his previous bank as he believed being New Zealand-owned it would be fair, the 24-year-old chef said.

However, since joining he felt Kiwibank was ''not fair'' and ''misleading'' with the way it charged fees, he said.

He questioned the 50c charge he faced for using a Kiwibank ATM and the $10 ''account out of order fee'' he was charged when his account went into overdraft following the removal of fees at the end of each month.

''It's not a whole lot, but it's the point of it that upsets me,'' he said.

After he rang and complained about the fees he had $40 deposited back into his account and he believed many people would be able to achieve the same result if they raised the issue with the bank.

''How many other people have fees they don't know they [are paying]?'' he said.

Kiwibank communications manager Bruce Thompson said the bank was ''trying to help people to avoid fees to the best of our ability''.

Kiwibank would reverse fees in ''one-off'' situations to help customers and would try to help them understand how to reduce the fees in future, he said.

''We have reversed the fees because our job is to help people get the best out of their bank,'' Mr Thompson said.

''He's not getting the best out of his bank because of the way he's using it.''

While they would try to educate customers on ways to reduce their fees, ''sometimes people don't like listening'', he said.

Fair Play on Fees lawyer Andrew Hooker, who is leading a class action suit against ANZ and Kiwibank over unfair penalty fees, said the charge for using ATMs was not illegal.

''That is a charge for a service. Now, whether 50c is a reasonable fee for using an ATM is another question,'' he said.

If customers were unhappy with the fees they were charged they should ''shop around''.
