Call for more women directors of council companies

Dunedin city councillor Fliss Butcher has called for more women to take positions as directors of council companies.

There are only two women among the 23 people who hold 45 directorships.

Cr Kate Wilson is a director of the Taieri Gorge Railway, and Kathy Grant is a government-appointed director of the Dunedin International Airport.

Dunedin City Holdings Ltd (DCHL) owns or part-owns seven companies: Citibus; Aurora Energy; Delta Utility Services; Dunedin City Treasury; City Forests; Dunedin International Airport and the Taieri Gorge Railway.

Cr Butcher said last week she was "going to do some tub-thumping" on the issue, when the finance and strategy committee discussed the election of directors.

While there were some very good experienced people in those roles, Cr Butcher said: "There should be some more women."

That will not happen this year, as directors who had retired under a rotation system had offered themselves for re-election.

Cr Wilson said yesterday she would like to see a wider skill base among directors, as most were accountants.
