Society of Beer Advocates (Soba) southern co-ordinator Richard Pettinger (right) hands over the best Otago-Southland bar award of 2013 and accepts a beer from Albar manager Stephen Moore, as fellow manager Tess Cooper works in the background and Soba member Michael O'Brien, of Oamaru, looks on.

Members of Soba voted the Dunedin bar the best bar serving craft beer in Otago-Southland in the society's inaugural awards.

Mr Pettinger said the Soba awards were to recognise, reward and encourage those providing excellent products and services to the beer community and industry.

Tonic was runner-up in the best bar category; Eureka, in Dunedin, was voted best restaurant in the Otago-Southland region with Riverstone Kitchen, in Oamaru, runner-up, while Centre City New World and Castle MacAdam, both in Dunedin, tied for best off-licence.

Invercargill Brewery won a bronze medal at the International Craft Brews and Food Fair in Dublin earlier this week.

The microbrewery won the medal for its fruit beer Boysenbeery. Other New Zealand medal-winners were Marlborough breweries Moa and Renaissance and Auckland's Schippers Brewing Company.
