Firefighters had to assist a young boy whose leg was caught in a bike during a cycle safety lesson.

Emergency services were called to Grant Braes School yesterday after reports a boy's leg was caught while he was taking part in a police cycle safety programme.

St Kilda firefighter Grant Clarkson said it appeared the boy was getting off his bike, when he got his leg caught between the pedal and shaft of another bike.

''It was jammed in there quite tight.''

Firefighters had to cut the frame of the bike to free him.

''He had a fairly big dent in his leg, but seemed fine,'' he said.

Principal Chris McKinlay said the incident ''was a bit of a freak occurrence and we will never see it again''.

The pupil had recovered well after the experience, Mr McKinlay said.
