Miss Fowler, a former Columba College pupil, was recently selected from several applicants for the annual $1000 scholarship awarded by the trust.

''She would have been selected by the panel had their been 15 people, such a deserving winner was she,'' Mr Graham said.

A first-year student at Otago, Miss Fowler said she was studying law and towards a Bachelor of the Arts degree. She would put the scholarship money towards her study costs.

''I am very grateful to the RSA.''

Her grandfather, Bill Fowler, had been a member of the Mosgiel RSA, she said.

The annual scholarship is open to young people from the greater Mosgiel and Green Island area.
