Wood cash theft

Police are investigating an alleged scam after cash left for a firewood supplier was stolen.

Brian Powell says he is $280 out of pocket after arranging for 4cu m of dry pine to be delivered to his Waverley home on Saturday.

He rang a number listed in the Otago Daily Times classifieds, and arranged with the firewood seller to leave money in his letterbox, ''which was probably stupid'', he said.

And the result?

''No money, no wood.''

Mr Powell left messages for the firewood seller, who did not return calls.

Police have visited several addresses supplied by the man, who they say has been the subject of several complaints.

Attempts by the ODT to contact the man yesterday were unsuccessful.

His voicemail message said ''Yeah, Mike here, you know the drill. Leave a message. Cheers''.

The ODT has suspended advertising from the man.

Police inquiries are continuing.
