Taieri pupils taking part in triathlon

More than 100 Taieri pupils will take part in today's Dunedin Primary and Intermediate Schools Triathlon.

There are 126 pupils from eight schools in the wider Taieri area registered for the event, now in its third year. Sport Otago organises the triathlon for children aged 9-12.

Community and schools adviser Kelly Hicks said the number of participants had almost doubled since last year. Today 353 pupils from 34 schools will take part. They will run from the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool along Victoria Rd to the Kettle Park grounds, loop back to the Esplanade and transition to the bicycle leg, which returns to Kettle Park.

Older pupils continue cycling to John Wilson Ocean Dr, and all participants will return to the Esplanade, where they will swim lengths of the pool. Year 5 and 6 pupils will run 1.5km, cycle 4km and swim 150m, while Year 7 and 8 pupils will run 2.5km, cycle 6km and swim 150m.

The event starts at 10am.
