$10,000 trust grant to help counter elder abuse, neglect

The Otago Community Trust has made a grant of $10,000 to Age Concern Otago to help counter elder abuse and neglect in Dunedin and Central Otago.

Age Concern executive officer Susan Davidson welcomed the funding and said that without it the organisation would not be able to respond to what was a growing problem throughout New Zealand, and globally.

Last year, case workers had found 100 cases of neglect or abuse in Dunedin, much of it psychological or financial. And 10% of those abused people were over the age of 90.

''We suspect this is the tip of the iceberg, so the service we provide is filling a real need in the community,'' Ms Davidson said.

The grant would help with the organisation's elder abuse and neglect prevention service. And it would support education and awareness programmes on elder abuse, and continue providing a casework service, which involved Age Concern social workers and other welfare agencies helping the abused or neglected elderly person to find solutions, she said.

The Community Trust granted a total of $162,550 to 44 Otago organisations during February, the funding supporting ongoing events and programmes, facilities for schools and community groups, and community celebrations, as well as essential requirements such as community defibrillators.
