Residents show support after break-in

The generosity of Taieri residents has overwhelmed Mosgiel Community Foodbank co-ordinator Michelle Kerr.

Earlier this month the Wickliffe St foodbank was broken into. Thieves jemmied a door open and stole food including chocolate and cookies.

The break-in left the charity facing a repair bill of several hundred dollars.

Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, confirmed police had identified a suspect and inquiries were continuing.

Mrs Kerr welcomed the news, adding the foodbank had been overwhelmed by resident's generosity.

That included a man who dropped off some money for repairs after reading of the foodbank's plight in the Otago Daily Times that morning, and another person who donated food equivalent to the stolen items.

''That was lovely. It was just so overwhelming, just so generous.''

The subsequent support had more than made up for the incident, she said.

''That is our community. They are fantastic.''
