University of Otago professor Helen May launches her book
about 125 years of kindergarten in Dunedin at the Dunedin
Kindergarten Association general meeting in St Clair this
The book - People, Places and Play in the `Child Gardens' of
Dunedin - was commissioned by the association to mark the
125th anniversary of New Zealand's first kindergarten being
established in Dunedin in 1889.
Prof May said it was an honour to be asked to write the book,
which she said showed snapshots of the people and programmes
associated with the kindergarten movement in Dunedin.
There are now 23 kindergartens in the city, with about 130
staff and 1400 children.
Association general manager Christine Kerr said 500 copies of
the book were published and a re-run was likely.
Almost 100 people attended this week's meeting, when some of
the association's life members were given copies of the book.
