Extension sought for flood work

Although Water of Leith flood protection work by the Otago Regional Council is continuing to make progress, the council has asked for an extension until July 10 to complete the work.

Those comments were made in a University of Otago property services report which was tabled at this week's meeting of the university's capital development committee.

The regional council has estimated the flood protection work in the area will cost about $5.4 million and will significantly boost flood-protection capacity.

The report said the council had written to the university in late February indicating the agreed construction programme completion date of June 2 was ''unlikely to be met'' and seeking the extension.

ORC staff had been invited to ''discuss the reasons for this more fully''.

Property services was continuing to work with the council and its contractors to ''limit disruption to campus access and activities''.
