Taieri athletes perform at big events

Marshall Hall won a bronze medal in the discus and was the best performed Taieri club athlete at the Australian championships.

Hall, the New Zealand champion, threw his discus 54.32m in Melbourne to reach the podium.

There were also top performances by AWD athletes who also reached the podium in their events.

Holly Robinson was first in the para ambulant F46 javelin with a throw of 34.13m.

Rory McSweeney was runner-up in the F44 javelin with 45.35m. Both throwers are part of Taieri coach Raylene Bates' throwing squad.

Another member is New Zealand senior women's javelin champion Tori Peeters, who finished seventh in her specialist event with 49.04m.

Jerram Huston finished ninth in the senior men's shot put at Melbourne with 14.84m.

Taieri club athletes also performed with credit at the South Island secondary schools athletics championships at Timaru.

Anna Grimaldi (Bayfield) took 5sec off the record in the AWD F47 100m in a time of 14.34sec.

Taieri College pupil Bradley Tarleton won the senior boys hammer throw with 51.80m.

In the senior girls grade Christina Ashton (Queen's) won the 100m hurdles in 14.66sec.

Felix McDonald (King's) won three events in the boys under-16 grade - 400m (51.61sec), long jump (6.49m) and 100m hurdles (13.50sec).

Peeters was named the Otago Athlete of the Year for her javelin performances during the season.

She was also the top senior summer athlete.

At last weeks's Athletics Otago awards night, Hall was named the most improved Otago athlete in track and field.

Taieri club mother and daughter Joan Merrilees and Megan Gibbons were named the Otago coaches of the year.

Holly Robinson was Otago's most outstanding paralympic athlete and Christina Ashton the best junior summer athlete.
