Coming third in a reality TV race brought them closer, while improving their cooking skills, Dunedin couple Melissa and James Steiner say.

The couple were eliminated from TV3's The Great Food Race in the contest's semifinal on Sunday.

Among highlights of the race, during which they often prepared food in unlikely places, was a trip to Shanghai, China, to compete.

They return to Auckland this weekend to appear in a live final alongside other eliminated contestants.

Mr Steiner said the show was aimed at good home cooks, rather than chefs, which suited the couple's skill level and interests.

They ''bluffed'' their way through meal preparation, improving their food skills along the way.

Mrs Steiner, a real estate agent, said tensions were inevitable in a high-pressure environment, both between and within the teams.

The couple had learnt more about each other during the show, which first aired in early February.
