Powergel ''sausages'' discovered in a Bacon St, Dunedin, shed were destroyed by the New Zealand Defence Force explosive ordnance disposal squad in the city yesterday.

Senior Constable Lox Kellas, of Portobello, said two PowerGel sticks, commercial explosive for ''blasting'' in quarries, were destroyed at Sandymount by squad members from Christchurch.

The explosives went up with a bang.
The explosives went up with a bang.
A Broad Bay resident contacted police after finding the ''two sausages'' of PowerGel- about 200g - when clearing his shed on Sunday, Snr Const Kellas said.

The explosives were safe and not leaking, he said.

Snr Const Kellas said it was a ''complete mystery'' how the explosives had been left in the Bacon St shed and the man had done the right thing by contacting police.
