A 25-year-old demolition worker initially charged with assault over the death of a 35-year-old man in a central Dunedin bar is now charged with murder.

Stephen Anthony Fernyhough was before the Dunedin District Court yesterday charged with murdering Ryan John Court on April 27.

Through counsel John Westgate, Fernyhough pleaded not guilty and was further remanded in custody to May 20.

On that day, his appearance, in the High Court at Dunedin, will be for a hearing by audiovisual link with a High Court judge in Christchurch.

Mr Court was found unconscious in the toilet area of Craft Bar, in the Octagon, about 1.40am on April 27, and was unable to be revived by ambulance staff.

Fernyhough first appeared on April 28 on two charges - assaulting Mr Court, and an unrelated charge of intentionally damaging a window, also on April 27.

At yesterday's appearance, before Judge Josephine Bouchier, the assault charge was withdrawn and the intentional damage charge adjourned, also to May 20.

Fernyhough has not sought bail.
