Girl (6) knocked off road by ute

A 6-year-old girl is in Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after stepping out in front of a ute yesterday afternoon.

The girl was playing with her brothers beside Macraes Rd, Dunback, when she ''has gone out in front of a double cab ute ... and been hit'', Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of the Southern District Command Centre, said.

The girl was thrown off the road and into a nearby ditch.

Emergency services, including the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter, were called to the scene at 4.30pm.

She was flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries, he said.

Victim Support had been called for the family and the driver of the vehicle.
