Girl (6) knocked off road by ute

A 6-year-old girl is in Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after stepping out in front of a ute yesterday afternoon.

The girl was playing with her brothers beside Macraes Rd, Dunback, when she ''has gone out in front of a double cab ute ... and been hit'', Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of the Southern District Command Centre, said.

The girl was thrown off the road and into a nearby ditch.

Emergency services, including the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter, were called to the scene at 4.30pm.
