Thirty-eight war veterans, including Otago's Tom Dungey (91) and Bill Roulston (93), of Tapanui, Alex McBurney (93), of Frankton, and Jim Quested (91), of Georgetown, in North Otago, prepare in Auckland yesterday to board a Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757, heading to Italy to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the battles of Cassino.

They will attend a service of remembrance at the Cassino Railway Station, and the New Zealand national commemorative service at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Cassino.

They will also attend a private service at the Abbey of Monte Cassino, and take part in a guided battlefield tour.
