A leaking 45kg gas cylinder has prompted an evacuation of a Dunedin street this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Melbourne St, South Dunedin, following reports of a "strong smell of gas in the area'', a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

Several properties were evacuated, and a cordon was put in place to allow firefighters to isolate the leaking cylinder.
