Celebrating song

Photo by Linda Robertson. The hills - and plains - around the Taieri have been alive with the sound of music for the past month as schools put the finishing touches to their performances for the 2014 Taieri Music Festival.

Pupils from Taieri College, East Taieri, Elmgrove, Lee Stream, Outram, Silverstream, St Mary's and Waihola schools will take the stage at Taieri College today and tomorrow at 7pm.

The Silverstream School choir is pictured rehearsing Life is Fun (Tricarico), one of the songs they will perform in the show.

Silverstream School teacher and massed choir co-conductor Peter Storer said each school would perform one or two items and songs would be performed by all in a massed choir.

''The highlight of the show is the diversity of the music that has been chosen by individual schools.

''There's a wide variety of styles and periods that it comes from.''

The concert programme included medleys of hits by the Beatles and Crowded House and the National Anthem, he said.

''The festival is mainly a chance for the children to get together with others that enjoy singing and celebrate the joy of singing, but particularly in a large group.

''For many of them, this will be the first time they will get to sing in a big combined, powerful choir.''
