Dunedin mayor Dave Cull (right) and Dunedin City Council safe and sustainable travel co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty (front, left) lead a group of cyclists over the new separated bicycle facility in Portobello Rd, near its intersection with Andersons Bay Rd, yesterday.

The council is running regular community rides on the new cycleways in South Dunedin.

Mrs Flaherty said the weekly rides started in February and were for people who wanted to enjoy an easy, social bike ride, with an emphasis on gaining confidence and exploring the new routes.

About 8% of all journeys in South Dunedin were made by bicycle and having the safer network in place would hopefully encourage more people to cycle, she said.

The rides take place every Thursday at 10am from St James Presbyterian Church at 405 King Edward St.
