Unclear how pedestrian hit by van

A man rushed to Dunedin Hospital after being hit by a van early yesterday was still in intensive care, but ''awake and progressing nicely'' last night.

The 36-year-old man, believed to be from Queenstown, was hit by a taxi van travelling north on Great King St about 1am, Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said.

The man was reported to be in a serious condition after the incident, with head and chest injuries.

However, last night there had been ''quite an improvement'' in his condition.

The taxi driver was breath-tested at the scene and found to be sober. However, police did not know whether the pedestrian had been drinking.

How the crash happened was still unclear, but ''it certainly sounds like he was on the road when he was hit'', Snr Sgt Scott said.

Police called for any witnesses to contact them on (03) 471-4800.
