Stepping up for the kids

Fundraising has begun for Mosgiel Central Kindergarten's new earthquake-proof building.

The kindergarten has offered the title of ''Mosgiel Kindergarten Taieri Business Person of the Year'' to the local person who raises the most money by July 4.

Head teacher Paula Reynolds said the kindergarten was well-supported in the area, and 14 business people had stepped forward.

The new building would be ''future-proofed'' for children's learning with stronger foundations, windows with double glazing, and extra space for children, staff and equipment, Ms Reynolds said.

''We'll have a wrap-around veranda, with a pull-down curtain for warmth or shade.''

Ms Reynolds said the additional space in would benefit everyone.

''With space for secure shelving, we can make it healthy and safe for children and staff.

''We've got five teachers sharing the staffroom now and you couldn't swing a cat in there.''

The new building will also feature a ''whanau room'' for families and teachers to meet.

The kindergarten has temporarily moved to Elmgrove School.

Next week, the old kindergarten building will be demolished, and construction would begin when the rubble is cleared. The new building is expected to be ready in January.
