Disruption during Moana maintenance

Dunedin's Moana Pool is in for a $180,000 face-lift before its 50th birthday.

But, like any good face-lift, there will be some pain to endure before the results can be enjoyed.

The Dunedin City Council-owned facility will mark its milestone in November, council aquatic services manager Paulien Leijnse said.

But swimmers will first have to put up with a series of partial closures over the next two months, while maintenance work is carried, she said.

That included closing parts of the main pool for a week, from July 7, while an ageing bulkhead spanning the width of the pool was replaced, she said.

The leisure and spa pool would be closed from July 28 to August 8, and drained, to allow maintenance work including new tiles and overhead lighting to be completed, she said.

The main pool's closure was timed to coincide with school holidays, when demand for it was lowest, while the leisure and spa pools would be out of action after the school holidays, she said.

The replacement bulkhead for the main pool would be lifted into place in three sections, each weighing up to 700kg, during which time the spa pool and rapid river would also have to close for a few hours, for safety reasons, she said.

While the main pool would never be completely closed, sections of it would be for intervals during the week-long period, she said.

During those times, lane swimming would still be possible, but with space for fewer lanes and running across the width of the pool, she said.

The new bulkhead would comply with International Swimming Federation (Fina) rules, allowing Moana Pool to host New Zealand championship-level events with Fina standards, she said.

''Unfortunately, there will be some disruption, and safety will take priority,'' she said.
