The name of the nine-week old German shepherd puppy was revealed today after a week-long naming competition which received more than 27,000 entries.
The new deputy dog was named after 7-year-old Dunedin boy Kohl Goodfellow, who has been blind since birth.
Kohl and his mother, Tash, were the first people to greet his namesake at Dunedin police station.
"I think it's good. Especially as his name is spelled the same as mine,'' Kohl said.
Sergeant Craig Baron, of the Dunedin Dog Section, said the name was "ideal''.
"It's short and sharp and one syllable,'' he said.
Southern District communications manager Vivien Pullar said police were pleased with the response to the competition.
"There has always been a lot of community interest in our police dogs. People love puppies.''
The other shortlisted names were Kaha, Kosta, Kaos and Kaida.
Kohl has been remanded in custody to reappear after an extensive police training programme.
