Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce speaks to about 100 people at the New Zealand International Science Festival opening in Dunedin Railway Station's Hope Gallery last night.

Mr Joyce said the ''unique'' festival was ''tremendous''.

''I'm a passionate believer in the importance of linking science to the community and in particular young people.''

More ''inquisitive'' youth needed to be ''inspired'' by science, he said.

Winners of a photography contest between Otago School of Medical Sciences staff and students were named last night. Category winners were Liz Duncan, Vernon Ward, Antonio Beretta, Gemma Laws, Ros Kemp and Sarah Baird. Top winner overall was staff member Dr Baird, whose photo of a Berlin food court resembled a magnified cell membrane.
