Police are considering charging a 72-year-old Dunedin man with careless driving after a head-on collision in the city about 6pm yesterday.

The man, the sole occupant of a red Toyota stationwagon, turned left from Howe St, driving south in the right-hand lane on Great King St - the wrong way on the one-way section of State Highway 1, Constable Joshua Burt, of Dunedin, said.

The car collided with a white Ford Falcon travelling north at 50kmh.

Both cars were extensively damaged but nobody was injured, Const Burt said.

A section of a lane in Great King St was closed for about 20 minutes.
