Sports centre set to be completed thanks to $150,000 from trust

Almost four decades after the Sunnyvale Sports Centre was first built, it will be completed, thanks to a donation from the Otago Community Trust.

The trust gave $150,000 to complete stage three of the centre - 38 years after it was built.

Green Island Combined Sports Bodies working party member Graeme Wyllie said the donation was ''very exciting''.

''It means the development is going to proceed,'' he said.

''It's almost emotional. It's brilliant. We have still got a little of cream to go because we are still waiting on the drawings from the engineer, but we have been told we will have them by the end of this month.''

It was hoped the $1.4 million project would be completed by July next year.

Stage three involves adding two squash courts and a hospitality area, replacing the gym floor and renovating existing facilities.

It was one of 31 donations made by the trust in May, totalling $511,200.
