Motorcyclist in court after police assault

A motorcyclist who allegedly bashed a police officer after a high-speed chase through central Dunedin has appeared in court.

The man, who has name suppression, faces charges of possessing cannabis for supply disqualified driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and assaulting a police officer with intent to avoid arrest.

He appeared in Dunedin District Court this morning, and has a registrar's adjournment to appear next month.

The incident took place around 10pm after the officer signalled the motorcyclist to stop as he rode through the central city, police said.

When the biker refused to stop, a chase began, reaching speeds of up to 100kmh.

The man eventually slowed and crashed, but when the officer tried to arrest him, the rider ran at him, swinging his helmet before punching him in the head several times, police said.

Back-up arrived and the man was arrested.

The officer received hospital treatment and was discharged.
