More than 2000 people got what they asked for at the Illuminate Paint Party.

Just before 9pm last night, revellers at Forsyth Barr Stadium yelled: ''We want paint''. And as the hour struck and bass pulsated through the stadium, they got it.

Cannons shot litres of orange and green fluorescent paint over the crowd.

As the orange and green melded together on their faces, the crowd looked like the offspring of an alien race, contorting and swaying to music. Unpainted hands pointed to the roof, contrasting with a sea of fluorescence.

It was 18-year-old Ankit Anthwal's first paint party and it was ''mean''.

''There's such a good vibe,'' the Dunedin teenager said.

''When it [the paint] drops ... it's such a good feeling.''

Fellow party-goer Simon McCaig (18), of Dunedin, agreed.

''We came in fizzing and now we are painted,'' he said enthusiastically.

OUSA marketing and communications co-ordinator Alasdair Johnston said the event's no-alcohol policy had resulted in good behaviour.

''It seemed to be working ... and the people there seemed to be having a good time.''

Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Matt Scoles said police had ''no problem at all'' with the party.
