The 32 players from the Mosgiel band placed third in the C-grade section of the street march.

Mosgiel Brass musical director Philip Craigie, who has been with the band for 25 years, said they had made great progress.

''We thought we played well. We were fairly happy with the way it went,'' Mr Craigie said.

An estimated 1000 musicians from 26 bands were in Invercargill for the nationals, which began on Wednesday and finished on Saturday.

Thousands lined Kelvin St in the central city to watch 24 bands march past.

The bands were judged on their appearance, marching skills and musicianship on the move.
