'Pointless' vandalism of children's playhouse

The vandalism of a children's playhouse has been slammed as ''pointless''.

A large wooden playhouse built by members of the Taieri Blokes' Shed was vandalised during the weekend, president Ian Miller said.

The door to the playhouse was locked with a padlock and after the individual - or individuals- ''tried to kick the door in ... they jemmied the lock off'', damaging the door in the process.

The damage to the playhouse, which was kept outside the Taieri Blokes' Shed at the Taieri Aero Club, was discovered on Tuesday by a club member after it had been sold to a Christchurch family, Mr Miller said.

''It was a pointless exercise because there was nothing in there they could have done,'' he said.

''There was nothing of actual value for them to take. It was just straight-out vandalism.

''It's children's equipment. These people that do these things have no respect for anybody or anything.''

A microwave, which did not work, was kept in the playhouse and it appeared it had been tampered with but it was not taken because it was screwed down.

''There were some soft toys in there for display ... so they took some of them ... and buggered off.''

It was disappointing to know ''someone is prowling around'' and that they would target equipment intended for children, he said.

Members of the Blokes' Shed, who had worked on the playhouse from September to November last year, had fixed it and its Christchurch-based buyers took it home yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Mark Crawford said police were investigating the incident, as well as another at the aero club.

It appeared the playhouse was broken into between Saturday and Tuesday morning, he said.

The weather vane from the roof of the hangar at the aero club was taken sometime between Monday and Thursday, he said.
