Digger runs over man's foot

Worksafe New Zealand has been notified after a 23-year-old man had his foot run over by a digger in Allanton on Saturday.

St John duty centre manager Brendan McInnes said the service was called to Douglas St about 12.30pm, after the digger rolled over the driver's foot.

The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

''It was painful ... apparently the digger was of a reasonable size.

''I don't think he will be walking around on it for a wee bit,'' Mr McInnes said.

Southern deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said it was believed the driver had hopped off the digger to open a gate when the digger slipped in some mud and ran over the man's foot.

Police had notified WorkSafe New Zealand about the incident, Snr Sgt Brown said.
