Warning after string of number plate thefts

Police are warning people to be vigilant after a string of registration plate thefts in the past week.

The front plate was taken from a car parked in Park St, North Dunedin, on Saturday afternoon and another front plate was taken from a car parked in Tay St, Mosgiel, on Friday night, Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

The latest plate thefts came after the front plates were taken from two cars on Wednesday.

‘‘It's odd. They are all single plates and have happened in four or five days, so that would indicate they are all related but they are spread out . . . so if it is the same person, then they are mobile,'' Sgt Aitken said.

In the past single registration plates had been taken to be used in drive-off petrol thefts, but no petrol drive-offs were reported during last week, he said.

The registration numbers of the stolen plates are AAS298 and OI7716.
