Been and gone and back again

It was more Mr Bean than Gone in 60 Seconds.

A Gore man borrowed his mum's car to rent a DVD from United Video.

So far, so good.

However, it turned out the 32-year-old borrowed more than just a movie.

''Because he wasn't familiar with mum's car, he jumped into the first similar looking car he found - that still had the keys in it - and drove that home,'' Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old man reported his car had been stolen from outside the Gore video store on Wednesday night.

Snr Sgt Brown said the DVD renter realised he had driven the wrong car home, and when he returned to the store ''found his mum's car where he had left it''.

And the lesson?''

Don't leave your keys in the ignition. And make sure you are hopping into the right car when you leave.''

Roll credits.
