More than 140 people have joined the newly formed Taieri College alumni group ahead of its official launch this Sunday.

Group president Kirsty Fiddes said she had been pleased with the number of former pupils - ranging in age from 18 to 80 - from Taieri College, The Taieri High School, Mosgiel Intermediate and Mosgiel District High School who had joined, but she was keen to get more people to do so.

The plan was to build up a database of former pupils of the four schools, three of which are now defunct, and start holding reunions, Mrs Fiddes said.

The group would allow ex-pupils and ex-teachers to give back to Taieri College, financially or by offering their skills.

Members would also be told about events at the school, and newsletters would feature ''tall poppy'' stories, highlighting ex-pupils' achievements.

Former pupils and teachers were also invited to come to an event marking the alumni group's launch at 1.30pm on Sunday.

After meeting at the college's library, people would be shown around the soon-to-be-demolished A block one last time and would also be provided with afternoon tea.
