Submissions against childhood centre

Neighbours arguing against the establishment of an early childhood centre in Mornington are set to make their case later this month.

Mary Wijesinghe, of Dunedin, has applied for consent to establish the centre at 66 Springhill Rd, Mornington.

It would offer a Montessori-based education programme catering for up to 20 children, aged 2 to 5 years, from Monday to Friday each week.

The proposal has already won written approval from three neighbours, but limited notification of the consent application has resulted in six of seven submitters opposing the development.

They worried it would add to traffic, parking and noise problems in the neighbourhood, which was already home to the larger Mornington Kindergarten, Mornington Presbyterian Community Centre and businesses.

Council consultant Aileen Craw, in a report to the council's hearings committee, said the problems could be adequately addressed by consent conditions, and has recommended consent be granted.

The application will be considered by the council's hearings committee on September 17.

Companies office records listed Mary Wijesinghe as the sole director and shareholder of Mighty Minds Montessori House of Children Ltd.
