Outram School pupils shouted with delight when their principal was doused with icy water.

Outram School deputy principal Amber Paterson said pupils donated $2 each to CanTeen on Thursday to nominate one of seven school staff members to take on the ''ice challenge''.

The ice challenge involves someone submerging themselves in ice cold water or having a bucket of cold water poured over them.

Principal Jeremy Marshall got the most nominations and had four pupils pour buckets of water over him.

The school was abuzz with ''hot excitement'' before the cold challenge, Mrs Marshall said.

Year 7 pupil Laurie Jenkins (11) said it was ''cool'' to pour water on Mr Marshall and was delighted with the ''jump'' his principal made.

Year 8 pupil and school council deputy chairwoman Mika Cottle (12) said the challenge raised $356.

Several pupils asked Mr Marshall if he enjoyed the experience.

''I always love having cold water poured over me on a spring afternoon,'' Mr Marshall said.
