700 speeding tickets in a week

Police have issued around 700 speeding tickets since starting a speeding operation in Dunedin city a week ago.

In the past week, 683 tickets have been issued for excessive speed and seven for failing to wear a seat belt.

The tickets were issued on Caversham Valley Rd, Kaikorai Valley Rd, Brighton Rd and the Southern Motorway.

Almost 250 of the tickets were issued for offences in Caversham Valley Rd.

Constable Anthony Bond, of the Dunedin police strategic traffic unit, said yesterday police caught two motorists travelling at 92kmh in a 50kmh zone.

One of the drivers, who was later found to be a disqualified driver, was charged with dangerous driving after he was observed overtaking on the left.

Traffic unit Acting Sergeant Andrew Camp said speed was a major factor in about half of the fatal crashes in the Dunedin area.
