A former banker with experience in solving organisations' risk management and funding issues is to take charge of guiding the Dunedin City Council companies' finances.

Richard Davey, originally from Dunedin, had more than 21 years of banking experience in New Zealand and Australia, council group chief financial officer Grant McKenzie said yesterday, announcing Mr Davey's appointment as the council's treasury manager.

Mr Davey will oversee Dunedin City Treasury Ltd, a council-owned company providing funding and financial services to other companies in the Dunedin City Holdings Ltd group.

Mr Davey will report to Mr McKenzie.

Mr McKenzie said Mr Davey's extensive skills and experience made him a welcome addition to the council.

Mr Davey said he was pleased to be joining the council, especially given its diverse treasury operations.

''It's also pleasing to be able to live in Dunedin and progress my career further with the council.''

Mr Davey, who was most recently director of corporate and institutional markets with the National Australia Bank in Melbourne, has a bachelor of commerce degree and a postgraduate diploma in commerce from the University of Otago.

His role was created after the retirement of Dunedin City Treasury Ltd chief executive John Knight, who left last month.

Mr Davey starts work on Monday.
