Students and staff are once again facing off at the University of Otago, but whatever happens Dunedin's foodbanks will be the winner.

Now in its third year, the Dunedin Community Food Bank appeal is tied at one apiece, with students collecting the most cans in 2012 and staff winning last year.

Otago University Students' Association president Ruby Sycamore-Smith said foodbanks were in constant need of support and this was a fun way for staff and students to lend a hand.

Vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne congratulated the students for making it an important annual event.

''The score for students v staff is all square and this is the all-important decider.

''I strongly encourage staff to rise to the challenge and give generously,'' Prof Hayne said.

Any inquiries and early drop-offs could be directed to the OUSA's Student Support Centre.
