The people involved in a two-car crash in Dunedin this morning were ''very lucky'' to escape with only minor injuries.

A Honda carrying four men in their late teens and early 20s rolled as it was travelling up North Rd about 8am, Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said.

A woman driving in a Subaru down the hill, above Normanby Tavern, was forced into evasive action and after pulling ''hard to her right'' left the road crashing into a fence.

Her car ended up with a wooden handrail through its windscreen, Snr Sgt Scott said.

The passengers from both vehicles were very lucky to escape with only minor injuries, he said.

''People die in far less serious car crashes.''

The occupants of the car going up the hill could have been thrown out as it rolled.

''It sounds like the lady was lucky too, because when she has crashed something has come through her windscreen.''

A St John spokeswoman said four people were taken to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries.

The road was blocked for some time after the crash.
