Good weather and friendly rivalry combined to create a record-breaking Blueskin spring flower show.

The 1045 entries were a record for the show, which is held annually at the Waitati Hall, Blueskin Garden Club secretary Lyn Hastie said.

''It brings the Blueskin community together and there is a bit of rivalry between mates.''

A lack of wind and rain in recent weeks had also helped and many of the spring blooms were in very good condition.

''We've also held the show two weeks earlier because the hall was booked out.''

The title of champion exhibitor went to Glenys Clements, for her floral design featuring blooms from her magnolia tree.

Inspired by a recent trip to Melbourne where the magnolias were in full bloom, she decided to pick the blooms from her tree for the first time. She did not know what type of magnolia it was.

''It's not a very big tree. It's about 15 to 20 years old but it's bloomed beautifully this year.''

The champion bloom award went to Christine Hardisty for a rhododendron. Pip Eason, of Waikouaiti, won best junior exhibit and most junior points and, together with her brothers Sam and Hamish, the award for the family with most points.
