It was a car-lover's dream at the Autospectacular event on Saturday with vehicles of all shapes and sizes on display.

Dunedin man David Ross (60) brought along his 1964 Silver Cloud III, which was one of 12 Rolls-Royces at the show held at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin.

He had always liked cars and the ''classic'' Rolls-Royce shape.

''When I was a kid, people had pictures of planes on their wall and nude women and things [but] I had pictures of cars on my wall,'' Mr Ross said as he carefully polished the car's grille.

''I'm from an engineering sort of background, so I appreciate the quality of the engineering, the workmanship, that goes into them,'' he said.

He developed a love of cars when he was young and, because of how much they cost to replace in those days, there were a lot of old cars on the road, unlike now when ''all the cars are within a certain era''.

''When I was going to school there was parents rocking up to school in a Model A Ford with their kids.''

It was unusual to see so many Rolls-Royces in one place, but he reckoned there were between 23 and 26 still in Dunedin, some of which were not on the road.

''A few less than when Mr [Michael] Swann was here. That got rid of five,'' Mr Ross said.

Autospectacular organising committee chairman Kevin Casey estimated there were 300 cars on show at the event.

He said he thought it was special having so many Rolls-Royces in one place.
