The group were part of a coastal clean up day organised by Our Seas, Our Future. Volunteers scoured the city's beaches and parts ofthe Water of Leith for rubbish which was delivered to a station at the St Kilda Surf Club, where it was sorted, with help from the Dunedin City Council and EnivroSchools, into recyclables and rubbish.

Organiser Noel Jhinku said 6.5 240 litre wheelie bins were filled with rubbish, including one bin with bottles and one with cans. The Yellow eyed Penguin Trust's efforts on the Leith, from the University of Otago registry building to the Botanic Garden, uncovered old furniture, televisions, parts of a bath and even a full recycling bin. ‘‘It was a good effort all round,'' Mr Jhinku said.
