Delays soon at Maia as SH88 repairs carried out

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on State Highway 88 at Maia for up to a week from Monday as contractors repair a retaining wall and guard rail damaged in a crash last year.

The site is about 300m north of the Jessie St intersection. New Zealand Transport Agency journey manager Graeme Hall said a single traffic lane would operate between 9am and 4pm on weekdays while the repairs were done, with two traffic lanes operating outside those times.

He said the job was being done ahead of the new cruise ship season, which starts early next month.

''The repairs were put off until now to avoid disrupting the cruise ship season that finished in April, and colder winter weather that's unsuitable for carrying out this type of work.''

Mr Hall said the job was ''reasonably challenging'', as it involved working around underground services, including fibre-optic cable that ran below the work site.

A traffic management plan would be in place to minimise any disruptions for road users. Mr Hall said reducing the highway to one lane was essential for plant and equipment to access the site.

The agency was not expecting significant delays for road users, although drivers should allow a few extra minutes' travel time when using the route between 9am and 4pm next week, and the Monday of the following week.

The work would cost about $30,000, and as long as there were no major weather disruptions, should be completed by September 29.
