Mosgiel Playcentre children could not wait to get their fingerprints taken and sit in the driver's seat of a police car at the Dunedin Police Station.

About 17 children wearing police name tags, hats, badges and jackets were taken on a tour of the station by Constable Kerry Fegan on Friday.

Mosgiel Playcentre supervisor Christine Mitchell said the visit was to extend children's emergency services knowledge.

''We have a few who always play police stations. They wear hats and love to dress up ... if anything goes missing or if anyone has lost something, a few of the boys will investigate, just like the police do,'' she said.

Const Fegan enjoyed showing staff, parents and children around the station.

''This is one of the best parts of my job,'' he said.
