Police eye on school vandals

Dunedin police are heading back to school, hoping to curb vandalism during the holidays.

Frontline police will be checking Dunedin schools regularly during the school holidays to prevent damage and vandalism, Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Inspector Kelvin Lloyd says.

''We have asked them to have a high-visibility presence [at schools] over the holiday time,'' he said.

Any spare frontline time would be spent checking schools throughout the city.

''Unfortunately, we know schools are at increased risk of damage during holiday time and we are doing this as a preventive measure,'' Insp Lloyd said.

Police would not focus on any particular area and ''all Dunedin schools'' could be checked.

Anyone found on school property would be moved along, he said.

''[Police would be] making sure that people who are on school property, especially during the evening and night, are there without criminal intent,'' he said.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious on school property was asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800 or to ring 111.
