About 40 people took part in a student rally at the University of Otago yesterday to show solidarity with the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

New Zealand Hong Konger, a Facebook group involving Hong Kongers living in New Zealand, had been helping to co-ordinate and organise rallies across New Zealand in support of democratic rights in Hong Kong, the group said in a statement.

New Zealand Hong Kongers had been saddened by the situation in Hong Kong, where students had been arrested and protesters attacked with pepper spray and tear gas, the group said.

Otago University Hong Kong Students Association president Audrey Tse said the association had not organised the Dunedin rally, and had not taken an official position over the situation in Hong Kong.
