The fishermen's huts at Poolburn came to life yesterday as anglers arrived for the opening day of the fishing season.

Making the most of the clear skies and calm morning conditions are (in order, above) Omakau angler Iain Hickey, who is attaching a beaded nymph to his fly line; Neville McArthur, of Clyde, who is trying his luck; and Graham Bell, of Clyde, and Alex Ross, of Alexandra, with three of the fish they caught using a Tasmanian devil lure.

Fish and Game Otago operations manager Ian Hadland said three rangers spoke to 67 anglers around the lake yesterday.

Those anglers had caught 80 fish and kept 21, the largest being 2.1kg.

''Everyone was well behaved and we're really pleased with how the season's started.''

Fish in the lake were feeding on freshwater crayfish, so their condition was expected to improve as summer advanced, he said.
