Trust grants to mark WW1

Donations by the Otago Community Trust have helped communities in Otago and overseas commemorate World War 1.

The South Otago Historical Society received $10,000 to help host a joint exhibition with New Caledonia in February 2015.

The exhibition, titled ''Never a week goes by'', contrasts the experiences of the war on the two colonies and cultures.

The donation was among $539,715 given by the trust in August.

Society spokesman Gary Ross said the exhibition was a moving and personal look at the impact of war in New Zealand and New Caledonia. The exhibition featured the stories of five Balclutha soldiers, including the effect on their families, he said.

It also detailed the chronology of war for the people of Noumea, New Caledonia, covering the themes of grief, hope and heroes, and the indigenous Kanak culture perspective.

The exhibition was the idea of New Caledonian historian Stephane Pannoux and represented the growing relationship between Balclutha and Noumea, begun when Madame Pannoux visited the area in 2011, he said.

The trust also donated $6000 to the Dunedin RSA for the commemorative embarkation march through Dunedin to the Dunedin Railway Station to mark the first deployment of troops from the Otago and Southland region.

Football South received $30,000 to help with hosting the Fifa under-20 World Cup in 2015.

The community trust gave a grant of $400,000 to the Warm Homes programme.
